Description
Photo 3: A view towards the southwest parallel to the strike of biotite rich schlieren in the schlieren-rich granite (Dsg) exposed on Cow Island. Schlieren (German word for “streaks”) are thin planar concentrations of darker colored minerals within lighter colored quartz and feldspar rich portions of the granite. The schlieren may record the flow of crystal-rich portions of the liquid magma during granite emplacement. A ca. 400 million year old U-Pb zircon age from this rock type is interpreted to represent the time of the crystallization of this magma deep underground. Cow Island, Bremen.
