Description

Photo 5: A view towards the north of the foliated porphyritic granite to granodiorite of the South Pond Porphyry (Dsp) that underlies Eastern Egg Rock. Close examination of the photo reveals a popcorn-like texture in the rocks which reflects the presence of large cream-colored alkali feldspar crystals set in a darker colored matrix rich in biotite (black mica), quartz, and finer grained feldspars (a close-up view is provided in Photo 6). North-south striking, vertically dipping foliation can be seen in this photo and is a result of superimposed tectonic stresses on the previously crystallized igneous rocks. East side of Eastern Egg Rock, Saint George.
