Description

Photo 6: A close-up view showing lithologic variability in the South Pond Porphyry (Dsp) that underlies Eastern Egg Rock. The more common porphyritic variety is on the left and illustrates the larger cream-colored alkali feldspar porphyroclasts set in a finer grained darker colored matrix rich in biotite (black mica), quartz, and feldspar. The parallelism of the large ovoid feldspar grains, the strongly foliated matrix, and pressure shadows of finer grained quartz and feldspar flanking the larger alkali feldspar porphyroclasts (red box) are suggestive of superimposed shear stresses. On the right is a less common non-porphyritic variety which exhibits the same mineralogy, except without the large alkali feldspar minerals. North end of Eastern Egg Rock, Saint George.
