Description

Photo 12: Close-up view of the amphibolite member of the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Ocea). The rock is composed primarily of dark-colored hornblende (an amphibole group mineral), and lesser amounts of light-colored plagioclase feldspar. The greenish-gray layer in the center of the photo is rich in calc-silicate minerals (diopside and calcic plagioclase feldspar). These rocks are interpreted to represent metamorphosed mafic igneous rocks that were emplaced (erupted?) within the Cape Elizabeth Formation, otherwise dominated by meta-sedimentary rock. Indian Point, Georgetown.
