Description

Photo 11: Close-up view of an andalusite- and sillimanite-bearing quartz vein in the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Oce). In this rock, the andalusite is pink, and sillimanite occurs as thin cream-colored inclusions in the andalusite. Andalusite and sillimanite are Al2SiO5 polymorphs and the presence of both in a rock tightly constrains the conditions of metamorphism. In this area, the peak metamorphic conditions correspond to depths of ~8 miles and temperatures of ~1100°F. Southwest side of Sagadahoc Bay, Georgetown.
