Description

Photo 5: Close-up view of sillimanite-rich mica schist of the pelitic schist member of the Casco Bay Group (Ocbs). Sillimanite, an aluminum-rich silicate mineral, is the purplish fibrous mineral in this rock and its presence indicates both a high aluminum content in the rocks and high temperatures of metamorphism. Schistose rocks within this unit are generally darker colored and contain more aluminous minerals (sillimanite, andalusite, garnet) than schistose rocks in the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Oce). Northwest side of Tottman Cove, Phippsburg.
