Description

Photo 4: Close-up view of the top surface of strongly foliated biotite granite within the dioritic gneiss unit (DSdg). Although the deformed granitic rocks shown above are subordinate within this unit, the photo provides a nice example of foliation, the parallel alignment of mineral grains present in many rocks throughout the quadrangle. In this rock, foliation can be seen in the alignment of black mica (biotite) and the elongated shapes of lighter colored quartz and feldspar. Both foliated and non-foliated varieties of granite are present and reflect different times of intrusion relative to ductile deformation. Fiddlers Reach Rd, Phippsburg.
