Description

Photo 12: Very rusty weathering mica schist and granofels of undivided meta-sedimentary rocks of the Casco Bay Group (Ocbu). The rusty weathering of this rock surface is due to the oxidation of fine-grained iron sulfide minerals in the rock. The parallel alignment of platy micaceous minerals in this metamorphic rock, known as foliation, dips vertically at this location, and strikes roughly parallel to the rock hammer handle (~20° east of north). Pig Cove, Southport Island.
