Description

Photo 11: View down on an outcrop surface (arrow points north) of tight, shallow plunging, upright folds in hornblende gneiss of the Casco Bay Group amphibolite (Ocba). These folds reflect ductile (plastic) deformation when the rocks were subjected to east-west directed compressional stresses deep underground while the rocks were at high temperatures. The geometry of these small-scale folds mimics the much larger scale folds that control the north-south trending outcrop patterns observed on the geologic map. Pig Cove, Southport Island.
