Description

Photo 10: Hornblende gneiss of the Casco Bay Group amphibolite (Ocba). The darker layers are dominated by the minerals hornblende (an amphibole group mineral) and plagioclase feldspar. The lighter green layers are calc-silicate rocks rich in diopside (a pyroxene group mineral) and calcic plagioclase feldspar. This unit contains both unlayered amphibolites which are interpreted to represent metamorphosed mafic (basaltic) igneous rocks, as well as amphibolite calc-silicate gneisses that may represent metamorphism of layered impure carbonate sediment. Pig Cove, Southport Island.
