Description

Photo 5: Crystallized commingled magma in the Cape Newagen Gabbro-Diorite (DScn). The rocks shown here represent a solidified example of mafic (gabbro) and felsic (granite) magma that commingled deep underground. Because of the contrasting viscosity of the two magmas, they behaved as immiscible liquids and did not mix. The Cape Newagen Gabbro-Diorite, while dominated by mafic igneous rocks (gabbro and diorite), contains a wide range of intrusive rock compositions (gabbro to granite) and textures. Western side of Cape Newagen, Southport.
