Description
Photo 2: Close up view of books of biotite (black mica) in light-colored quartz-feldspar-rich pegmatite. Pegmatite is a very coarse grained variety of granite and is ubiquitous in the quadrangle, occurring primarily as meter- to sub-meter-wide tabular dikes and sills in surrounding metamorphic rocks. The dikes and sills formed when fluid silica-rich magma flowed up through cracks in the surrounding rocks deep underground and then solidified in place. Grandview Avenue, Boothbay Harbor.
