Description

Photo 8: Dark gray amphibolite in the Casco Bay Group (Ocba). These rocks are dominated by the minerals hornblende and plagioclase feldspar and are interpreted to represent metamorphosed mafic (basaltic) igneous rocks. The elongate white boudins in the amphibolite are remnants of a younger granite sill that intruded the amphibolite and was then later pulled apart during ductile deformation. Amphibolite is also present in the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Ocea). Inner Heron Island, South Bristol.
