Description

Photo 8: Alternating layers of light gray feldspathic and micaceous quartz-rich granofels (bottom) and darker gray sillimanite-rich mica schist (top) of the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Oce) of the Casco Bay Group. Prior to metamorphism, these were alternating beds of quartz-rich sand and fine-grained mudstone. Sillimanite (white knots in the upper layer) is an aluminous metamorphic index mineral whose presence indicates these rocks were once heated to over 900°F during metamorphism. Plummer Point, Damariscotta River, South Bristol.
