Description

Photo 4: Close-up view of porphyritic gabbroic rocks (DSfp) exposed in a small mafic intrusion within the Bucksport Formation (Sb). Porphyritic refers to an igneous texture where larger minerals, in this case black hornblende, are contained within a finer grained matrix. Here the matrix is finer grained hornblende and light gray plagioclase feldspar. The age of this particular intrusion of mafic magma is unknown. Lower Fitch Point, Damariscotta River, South Bristol.
