Description

Photo 2: Light-colored intrusive igneous rock (granite pegmatite) cutting across rusty-weathering gneissic rocks of the Cross River Formation (O0cr). The granite dike formed when hot silica-rich fluid magma flowed up through cracks in the gneiss deep underground and then solidified in place. Pegmatites are a very coarse grained variety of granite and are composed primarily of cream-colored feldspar, light gray quartz, and lesser amounts of mica (often both biotite and muscovite). Roadside outcrop, Bristol Consolidated School, Bristol.
