Description
Photo 6: Close-up view of the biotite gneiss of the Vassalboro Group (SOvbg) at the road cut shown in Photo 5. The thin, lighter colored layers in the rock are interpreted to represent solidified granitic melts that were derived from partial melting of the surrounding darker colored metamorphic rock. This process of in situ partial melting is known as migmatization. This kind of composite metamorphic and igneous rock formed by partial melting is known as a migmatite. Large roadcut south of Route 9, Durham, approximately 300 feet west of the intersection with Route 125.
