Photo 1: View looking down on a horizontal pavement outcrop of felsic gneisses of the Nehumkeag Pond Formation (Onp). Gneiss is a high-grade metamorphic rock that is characterized by alternating light and dark layers. In this rock, the light layers are rich in the minerals quartz and feldspar, whereas the darker colored layers contain an abundance of biotite (black mica). Approximately 480 feet west-northwest of the intersection of Highland Road and Pleasant Hill Road, Brunswick.
