Description

Photo 5: Multiple episodes of magma intrusion into biotite granofels of the Vassalboro Group (SOvu) are revealed in this vertical rock face. The oldest intrusions (1) are light-colored granitic sills that are parallel to the gently east-dipping layering (left) in the surrounding country rocks. The second generation of intrusions (2) are also light-colored and granitic in composition, but they cross-cut the layering and dip to the west (right). Finally, the youngest rocks in the image and in the Yarmouth quadrangle (about 200 million years old) are dark colored diabase dikes (3), here dipping more steeply to the east (left). Vertical road cut on the I-295 Exit 15 ramp in Yarmouth, note rock hammer for scale.
