Photo 1: Close-up view of gneisses of the Nehumkeag Pond Formation (Onp). Gneiss is a high-grade metamorphic rock that is characterized by alternating light and dark layers. In this rock, the light layers are rich in the minerals feldspar and quartz, whereas the darker layers contain an abundance of biotite (black mica). Shoreline exposure on the southeast side of the mainland peninsula west of Bowman Island, Freeport.
