Description
Photo 10: Garnet-bearing, porphyritic amphibolite of the Greenland Cove Member of the Bucksport Formation (Sbgc). In the case of this rock, porphyritic refers to the larger light colored plagioclase feldspar minerals set in a finer grained matrix of hornblende (an amphibole group mineral) and feldspar. The larger feldspar grains are interpreted to represent relict phenocrysts in a volcanic rock prior to metamorphism. The rocks in this member of the Bucksport Formation are interpreted to represent deformed and metamorphosed Late Silurian volcanic rocks of intermediate to mafic composition. West side of Greenland Cove, Bremen.
