Description

Photo 7: Alternating layers of light gray garnet-bearing, micaceous quartz-rich granofels (bottom) and darker gray sillimanite-rich mica schist (top) of the Cape Elizabeth Formation (Oce) of the Casco Bay Group. Prior to metamorphism, these were alternating beds of quartz-rich sand and fine-grained mudstone. The abundance of minerals such as muscovite (white mica), garnet, and sillimanite indicate the original sediments in the Cape Elizabeth Formation were more aluminous than those of the Bucksport Formation (Sb) which do not contain these aluminous minerals. Robinhood Cove, Route 127, Georgetown.
