Description

Materials pertaining to the meeting of the Maine Acadian Culture Preservation Advisory Commission held in Van Buren on October 19, 1995 and chaired by Richard Dumont (president of the University of Maine at Fort Kent). Proceedings included an acknowledgment of new Commission members and the resignation of Geraldine Chassé; approval of a prior transcript and summary report; a presentation on St. Croix Island by Wayne Kerr; a report from the Heritage Council working group; a report from NPS staff member Don Cyr; and a public comment period with input from John Lajoie, Guy Dubay, and Bob Madore.

Other materials in these files include: correspondence between Geraldine Chassé and Bruce Jacobson; the September 1995 newsletter; a news release announcing Wayne Kerr's talk; news clippings; summary reports of the August 1995 meeting held in Lille and this meeting in Van Buren; congressional correspondence; a letter explaining the decision to cancel the December 1995 meeting; and an early draft of Maine Acadian Heritage Council bylaws from Claude Cyr.

Note from the summary report: "At the time of the meeting, Congress had not appropriated monies to support the Maine Acadian Culture Preservation Commission for Fiscal Year 1996. Therefore, no funds were available to contract for a court reporter to make a verbatim transcript. This summary report is based on notes taken by Mr. D. Cyr and Mr. Jacobson. An audio tape of the meeting is on file at Acadia National Park."
