Description
1874 - The B&B was built to wide gauge (5 foot) in 1874. It was bought by the E&NA a few years later and re-gauged to 3 feet then leased to the MEC shortly after when it was moved yet again to standard gauge. This photo looks like the original construction crew laying ballast. Can those planks in the foreground be ties?? I grew up in the large house on the skyline in this photograph. Today three tracks pass here although there is no traffic on them since the paper mill has closed. R&LHS RR History #152 says this locomotive was the "Dirigo' obtained from the Bangor Orono & Milford (BO&M) in 1870 and run on the B&B until 9/1879. It was scrapped in 1892. /DL
