1890c P&O Tran#57 on the Mtn. Auth Kilburn 001

Description

This scene is from a stereo view slide by B. W. Kilburn of Littleton, N.H. I suspect the train is stopped at the east end of the trestle and that the camera is on the ballast trackside, so the fall for the maiden perched on the locomotive shouldn't be too far... (?!) There is no date with this photo but it looks to be in the post P&O (Portland and Ogdensburg RR) days after the MEC leased the line in 1888. At some point this trackage became MEC's Mountain Division. In the distance is Willey House which if memory serves was a section house for the section man and his family. We don't know the engine number on the smoke box as it is behind the girl's right arm but it looks like this is Train #5 or 57 judging by the number(s) in front of the head lamp. Fireman and engineer are making their presence known from the cab... /DL
