Description
This looks like a crossing or switch tender's shelter at the west end of the 1/2 mile passing siding at Etna in the 60s. What catches my eye is the pipe mounted on the ties of what seems to be the siding. Apparently the switch was set up with remote mechanical operation possibly operated from the station to the west. An MEC track diagram from the 60s shows a shelter beside the Rt143 crossing which would have crossed 3 tracks at that time two main line and the single siding. MEC track folks I've talked to in years past said the RR used to turn out these shelters 6 or 8 at a time from a standard plan. A similar one stands to day (ca.2021) at City Point Station in Belfast on the B&ML. /DL
