Description
So Distinguished a Forest: Only in Maine provides an overview of Maine’s forest resources, forestry history, and wood products industries, emphasizing the state’s long-standing identity as one of the nation’s most heavily forested and forest-dependent states. Published cooperatively by the Maine Forestry Department and the USDA Forest Service’s Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, the booklet describes Maine’s timber production, shipbuilding and pulp-and-paper history, forest ownership patterns, major tree species and forest types, wood products manufacturing, recreation and wildlife benefits, forest management practices, and the role of the Maine Forestry Department in fire protection, insect and disease control, landowner assistance, education, nursery management, and forestry research. The publication does not include a clear publication date, but internal evidence suggests that it was likely published sometime between 1973 and 1976. Overall, the booklet highlights the economic, environmental, and cultural importance of Maine’s forests and the challenges involved in sustaining them for future use.
