Description

What this handbook is:

This handbook is an addendum to the Maine Forest Service (MFS) publication Best Management Practices for Forestry: Protecting Maine’s Water Quality, and describes Best Management Practices, or BMPs, for protecting water quality with extreme weather in mind. The principles and practices described here are designed to supplement these BMPs with ideas and practices that can be used to plan for, mitigate and adapt to unexpected extreme weather events.

This handbook is for loggers, foresters, woodlot owners and others involved in harvest operations. The handbook will help you understand the potential risks of extreme weather events and suggests adjustments to traditional techniques and use of newly innovated methods to protect water quality during and before these events occur.

What this handbook is not:

This manual is not meant to replace the existing Maine Forest Service publication Best Management Practices for Forestry: Protecting Maine’s Water Quality, but to supplement it. The principles and practices described in this manual are not necessarily better than those described in the existing manual, but rather better suited to respond to extreme weather during certain conditions.
