Description
Phippsburg Bill for Board of Abigail Johnson and Her Son William, 1848, details expenses paid by the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor to the Town of Phippsburg for the board and clothing of Abigail Johnson and her son William. On January 23, 1845, Johnson, a married woman and Cumberland pauper, accused Jonathan Barbour, the hired superintendent of the Cumberland town farm, under oath of “begetting her with child” in June 1844 while living on the town farm. Barbour was quickly apprehended and brought to trial in the weeks that followed.
