Description
Prince Memorial Library Catalogue 1936 is the printed catalogue of the 4,150 volumes held by the library. As stated in the catalogue, “In 1922, in accordance with the will of Mr. and Mrs. Carrol D. Prince, former residents of Cumberland, a sum of money was made available to establish, equip and endow a Library for the town of Cumberland to be located at Cumberland Centre. A corporation was formed consisting of twelve members chosen by Mrs. Thomas Wyman, executrix of the will, as follows: Dr. Henry M. Moulton, Mrs. Thomas Wyman, Mr. Frank Chase, Mrs. Charles Jenkins, Mr. Harlan Sweetser, Mrs. Archie Wyman, Mr. Arthur Blanchard, Mrs. Millard Burnell, Mr. Willard Wilson, Mrs. Walter Barter, Mr. Robert Thomes and Mrs. Wallace Merrill. Mrs. John B. Thomes of Pittsfield, Mass., also a former resident, gave the lot of land on which the Library stands. The architect was Mr. George Emery of Boston, the contractor, Frank A. Rumery & Co. of Portland. The building is Georgian Colonial in style and has a doorway copied from one in old Hempstead, England. The Library was dedicated on Sunday, Jan. 7, 1923. The dedicatory prayer at the Library was followed by appropriate exercises at the Congregational Church. Dr. Henry M. Moulton, President of the Corporation, presided and Prof. Wilmot Mitchell of Bowdoin College gave the address. The following Tuesday the Library opened with 1150 books on the shelves and eleven magazines on the tables. At present there are 4150 books on the shelves and twenty current magazines on the tables.”
