Description

MAP CAPTION- Photo 3: Very rusty weathering schist of the Penobscot Formation (OC#p). When exposed to weathering, sulfide minerals in the rock react to produce a variety of compounds on the rock surface probably containing iron (orange brown), manganese (purplish-black), and sulfate (yellow). Water analyses from bedrock wells drilled in the Penobscot Formation in this region commonly show various amounts of these and other constituents. Northeast Point, Camden.
