    Description

This workbook contains archived data from Maine's first breeding bird atlas, conducted from 1978 through 1983. The project documented the status and distribution of breeding bird species throughout Maine using 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles as survey units.

The Atlas Data worksheet contains three fields: a code identifying the 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle, an American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) species number, and a breeding-status value. Breeding-status values are 1 = possibly breeding, 2 = probably breeding, and 3 = confirmed breeding. These definitions are taken from documentation preserved with the original electronic dataset.

The AOU Codes worksheet provides the historical AOU species-number and species-name lookup information that accompanied the archived data. The Documentation worksheet provides information about the structure, coding, and provenance of the dataset.

The workbook was created to consolidate the archived data and accompanying documentation into a single, more accessible file while preserving the content and coding of the original electronic records.
