Description

Materials pertaining to the meetings of the Maine Acadian Culture Preservation Advisory Commission held in Frenchville on February 21, 1997 and in Fort Kent on April 18, 1997. Richard Dumont chaired both meetings.

Agenda items for the first meeting:
- Welcome and call to order (R. Dumont);
- Review of December 20, 1996, summary report (R. Dumont);
- "Superstitions in Acadian Folk Medicine" by Dr. Marielle Cormier-Boudreau;
- NPS staff report (D. Cyr and B. Jacobson);
- Upcoming commission meetings and speakers (R. Dumont);
- Other business;
- Adjournment;
- Refreshments.

The meeting in Fort Kent failed to reach quorum. Dr. Jean-Claude Dupont spoke on "Myth and Symbol in French-Canadian and Acadian Folklore." NPS staff member Don Cyr provided updates on the newsletter, the traveling exhibit, the speaker series held under the Evangeline Project, and the brochure. John Martin discussed the forthcoming incorporators' meeting for the Maine Acadian Heritage Council.

The attached file includes correspondence with Estelle Lavoie of Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau, and Pachios concerning the formation of the Maine Acadian Heritage Council; summary reports for the Lille (December 1996), Frenchville (February 1997), and Fort Kent (April 1997) meetings; the agenda for the Frenchville meeting; and a draft for an NPS brochure on St. John Valley heritage.
