Description
Sometime around 1949 or 1950 my father, Franklin Larrabee, took my brother John for a steam tug ride up the Penobscot from Bucksport to Bangor. This photograph is apparently taken from the cat walk in front of the Walter Ross's pilot house looking up the river. Bangor's river front was a working coast back in those days. On the left are a couple of commercial wharves the first one looks like it once served the coastal passenger ship traffic and beyond there is what looks like a steel sailing ship's hull with no masts or superstructure. My guess is that this vessel was used as a barge hauling a bulk commodity, perhaps coal.... Beyond that is the Maine Central Passenger Station, coach yard and passenger boarding shed. The highway bridge is next with RR bridge for the Calais and Bucksport branches still further up stream. As a bonus if you zoom in it looks like a steam locomotive is headed east with what looks like a string of box cars. /DL
