If I recall from other period RR photos correctly ashes are being dumped from the ash pan down between the rails & into a hopper which will be pulled up the guides and dumped into the gondola for later disposal... This 2-6-2 is an ALCO product built at Schenectady, builders number 65551. This Class S was one of 32 locomotives in the series... /DL
