Description

Here an early Maine Central GP9 is passing the ball signal at the east end of the passenger yard at Portland. There is no date on the back of this old photo but a mid 1950s is likely a reasonable guess. The pair of rail bridges on the right still stands ca.2020 crossing over the intersection of Park and St.John Streets. Behind the signal man's shelter out of sight is a 6 track bridge across Park Ave which, ca.2020, musters just 1 track, however when this scene was captured I suspect most of the lanes on that bridge were carrying rail traffic.
