Description

The back of this old print says: - Mt. Waldo Granite Co 6 0-4-0 Tank. Vulcan 1927 3684 B.M.Grenci 7/29/34 Mt. Waldo Maine - The quarry had an interchange with the BAR and operated about a mile of track much of which used a steam winch to rise and lower flat cars up and down the side of the mountain. This locomotive would have operated in a small yard at the stone works along side Marsh River in Frankfort and would have crossed what today is RT1A to handle the cars coming down the mountain a few hundred feet to the west. I believe the quarry was still in business into the 50s. In the early 70s the ROW and ties up to the mountain top were still in place as were the pulleys which guided the cable around a couple of curves at the top of the hill. During my visit there about 1972 one of the stone cars were still on the the hill top but had been burned. Sure wish Id had a camera on the climb. Author is unknown. /DL
