Description
Railroads are not just about track & locomotives. Roads like MEC were pioneers in business management practices. At its peak MEC was operating something like 1200 miles of track and had 7000 employees across 3 states. Station Agents (freight and passenger) shop workers, track maintenance, signal and telegraph maintenance, engineering staff and many more occupations were behind the steam, smoke and screeching wheels. This scene is from an old cabinet photograph. In fountain pen on the back: "Office Motive Power Dept: MCRR Portland Maine. Jack Honer (hard to read this one) right, Lewis P. Blanchard left, G.H. Mayberry center." The Motive Power Office was in charge of locomotives. Lots of cubby holes. Excel is years away. /DL
