1891 08 MEC Tariffs

Description

These two tariff's are interesting. The first one concerns slate shingles apparently being picked up from the Bangor & Aroostook at Dover and Foxcroft for delivery to Providence, R.I. I strongly suspect these car loads originated at the slate mine in Monson and were moved over the 2 foot Monson Railroad to Monson Junction where they would be trans loaded to standard gauge cars on the BAR. Hard work for the guys at the Junction as I expect a square of slate singles were rather heavy. A similar tariff for 25 cents per hundred weight of cotton piece goods leaving Lewiston probably covers factory output from the fabric manufactures in Lewiston at that time.... Note that both documents specify the intervening railroads to handle the goods each step along the way. /DL
