Description
The Maine Central's history runs from the Civil War era to about 1980. As the the RR matured and gained profitability the various departments expanded and built upon their past accomplishments. With increased traffic the engineering support for track maintenance and structures accountability followed the upwards curve. Part of the process required that engineering management have tools at their fingertips to best direct resources. Such a tool was this detailed inventory of the Bucksport Branch. Apparently the process for this work measured the track in 100 foot increments then measured from each increment to notable features of the branch. For instance the 4th item on page one of this document reads "11+34.07 Mon. Curve Left 8 (degrees) 50' 575.47' " It can be decoded to mean that from the starting point it is 11034.07 feet to the monument noting the start of a left 8 degree curve which runs for 575.5 feet. The next item is for a private crossing at 1274.00 feet and on and on to the last entry reading "997+91.00 Face of Bumper Post" which is 99700 feet from the junction in Bangor or about 18.8 miles. As a side bar in the 1970s that bumper post was "taken out of service" when a run away string of cars ran thru it into a building used as a warehouse for Rosen's Department Store in downtown Bucksport. The bumper face, (the post being made of wood) ended up on the shore nearby enjoying two baths in the Penobscot river at high tide each day.... /DL
