Description
This booklet lists all MEC telegraph offices in the Summer of 1925. Included are their Call Signs, a 1 letter or 2 letter digraph, and the wire pair(s) they were working or that passed thru their location. Circuits with an 'x' had no telegraph instrument on that wire at that location. For instance Dixfield 'DX' was on circuits 1 and 14. Leeds Junction 'JE' was on circuits 2, 9, 19, 116, x123, and 127 and Bucksport at the end of the branch had just 1 circuit, 'KS'. In the case of control points such as Junctions and large offices such as Bangor many circuits passed thru their purview. Most of these Offices were manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's no wonder that in the mid 1920 MEC boasted around 7000 employees system wide. As a side note I grew up in Bucksport where our back yard was adjacent to the MEC right of way. There was a telegraph pole on the edge of the row with a single wire pair (circuit #20). I remember seeing a Vibroplex Bug or simi-automatic key setting on a desk in the train station ca. 1958. /DL
