Description

A plaque outside the Portland Public Library in Portland, Maine, reads, "This is the site of the United States Hotel, which originated in a three story house built by Dr. Nathaniel Coffin in 1803. A leopard, advertised as the first in America, was exhibited here in 1809. In 1971, the present ten story office building was completed and opened."
