Description

Transcription of a newspaper article published in the Hallowell Weekly Register on March 17, 1900, containing an abstract of a historical sketch delivered by Miss Annie F. Page on Sunday evening, March 11, 1900. The article recounts the origins and early history of Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell, Maine; the construction and architectural features of its earlier meeting house; ministers, parishioners, worship practices, music, and furnishings associated with the congregation; nineteenth-century alterations to the building; and its destruction by fire in 1878. The article concludes with remarks by the Rev. George B. Cheever reflecting on the loss of the historic meeting house.
