Description
Warrant for the Arrest of Jonathan Barbour of Cumberland, January 23, 1845 is a warrant for the arrest of Jonathan Barbour, the hired superintendent of the Cumberland town farm, issued by Joseph Smith, a Justice of the Peace of Portland. On January 23, 1845, Abigail Johnson, a married woman and Cumberland pauper, swore under voluntary oath that Jonathan Barbour was the father of her unborn illegitimate child due to an encounter on the town farm in June 1844. The back of the warrant confirms Jonathan Barbour’s arrest on January 24, 1845.
