Description
School Agents’ Returns, Cumberland, Maine, 1874 was compiled in April 1874 by the school agents of the Town of Cumberland. Maine law in 1874 required agents to “return to the Assessors in the month of April, a certified list of the children in his district between four and twenty-one years of age, as they existed on the first day of said month, exclusive of those coming from other places, where they belong, to attend any college or academy, or to labor in any factory therein.” This volume contains the names and ages of the scholars in District 2 (Tuttle Road/Middle Road), District 4 (West Cumberland/Shawtown), District 5 (Outer Blanchard Road), District 6 (Greely Road), District 7 (Winn Road), District 9 (Chebeague Island East End), and District 11 (Crotch/Cliff Island). The School Agent’s Return for District 7 (Winn Road), signed by E. G. Prince and appearing in this volume after the District 6 return, is mislabeled as District No. 5. The School Agent’s Return for District 11 (Crotch/Cliff Island), signed by Moses G. Pettingill and appearing in this volume after the District 9 return, is not labeled on the actual sheet, but has been verified as being for District No. 11.
