Description
School Agents’ Census Returns, Cumberland, Maine, 1877 was compiled on April 1, 1877, by the school agents of the Town of Cumberland. Sections 60 and 61 of Chapter 11 of the Maine Revised Statutes, amended by an act approved Feb. 23, 1876, required school agents to present to the Assessors and Superintending School Committee in the month of April a certified list of the district’s “children between four and twenty-one years of age, as they existed on the first day of said month, exclusive of those coming from other places, where they belong, to attend any college or academy, or to labor in any factory therein.” This volume contains the names and ages of the scholars in District 2 (Tuttle Road/Middle Road), District 3 (Cumberland Center), District 4 (West Cumberland/Shawtown), District 5 (Outer Blanchard Road), District 7 (Winn Road), District 9 (Chebeague Island East End), District 11 (Crotch/Cliff Island), District 12 (West Cumberland), and District 13 (Bruce Hill Road). The agent for District 6 (Greely Road) submitted a note dated April 7, 1877, reporting the presence of “four scholars in our district, No. 6 qualified to draw school money”, without providing names for those scholars.
