Description

The Scandinavian Insurance Association of Falmouth and Cumberland ledger is a hand-written ledger book of an insurance association formed by immigrant Scandinavian farmers living in the Maine towns of Falmouth and Cumberland. The association was formed on February 4, 1905, and insurance was for loss by death of their dairy cows and later their horses. The ledger contains the association by-laws, records of meetings, membership rolls, transactions and other items from 1905–1912. The founding members of the Scandinavian Insurance Association of Falmouth and Cumberland were Christian Bruns, Lauritz Dyhrberg, Hans Henrik Hansen, Martin Mikkelsen, Peter Olsen, Hans Peter Petersen and Thomas Thomsen. The ledger was transcribed and translated by Philip L. Stanhope, the great-grandson of Hans Henrik Hansen.
