Description
Cumberland Town Meeting Records, Volume 3: 1898–1927, contains transcribed copies of the official records of town meetings conducted in the Town of Cumberland, Maine, for the period September 12, 1898, through December 7, 1925.
The last notation in Volume 3 refers to an action taken by selectmen on January 3, 1927, which was received by Town Clerk Nellie B. Jordan on January 13, 1927, and “recorded in Book 5, Pages 397, 398, Records of the Town of Cumberland.” Vol. 3 consists of two books, identified as Records of the Town of Cumberland Book No. 3 (Vol. 3, p. 1), and Book No. 4 (5?) Records of the Town of Cumberland (Vol. 3, p. 206). There seems to have been some confusion on the part of the transcribers as to the book numbers of the original Records of the Town of Cumberland. There does not, however, appear to be a break in the dates of the meetings recorded.
The Town of Cumberland was incorporated on March 19, 1821, after a successful secession effort by the residents of the northwestern section of the town of North Yarmouth. Cumberland Town Meeting Records contain copies of the warrants and outcomes of the official meetings held in the town; appointments to local committees and positions; the results of all voting for local and statewide ballots; details on the perambulation of town boundaries; and other official matters undertaken by the Town.
In 1956, residents at town meeting voted to raise and appropriate $200 for the purpose of preserving the early records of the town meetings of the Town of Cumberland. No funds were expended for that purpose in 1957, and an additional $200 was appropriated. Hazel W. McGoff was paid $170 for typing during 1958, and a further $125 for that purpose in 1959, and Lena G. Foster was paid during 1959 for binding the old record books. Another $200 was appropriated in 1960, but none of the funds were expended and the balance was put back in the general fund. Cumberland Town Meeting Records Volumes 1–7 are the results of those preservation efforts.
Cumberland Town Meeting Records include the following volumes: Vol. 1: 1821–1851 -- Vol. 2: 1851–1898 -- Vol. 3: 1898–1927 -- Vol. 6: 1926–1936 -- Vol. 7: 1937–1952.
