Description
Weatherend, at the tip of Beauchamp Point in Rockport, which was owned by the John Gribbel, president of Curtis Publishing.
While the first summer people came from cities in Maine such as Bangor, the Eastern Steamship Line quickly established routes that brought Bostonians seeking to escape the city. The building boom started in earnest in 1886, when industrialist Joseph Stearns built his stone “castle” known as Norumbega on High Street in Camden, and soon wealthy Americans began arriving from cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York to establish their own summer estates.
