Description

Stephen Ritterbush (at far right in hat) was one of the area’s busiest builders. Here he is with his large crew, taking a photo break from working on Timbercliffe, the “cottage” of Chauncey Keep on High Street in Camden. Ritterbush employed more than 100 men and his crew built many of the large estates in the Camden and Rockport area, including Chauncey Borland’s “Grey Rocks”on High Street and the Sneath cottage on Beauchamp Point. His crew also built the Mt. Battie Woolen Mill in 1892 and in 1916, the Camden YMCA on Chestnut Street.

Mr. Ritterbush had the honor of sending the first parcel post from the Camden Post Office, which contained samples of dirt from the post office lot on Chestnut Street. The samples were sent to the architect supervising the plans for the new post office.
